I am currently working pt,i have always worked,i have 1 child who's 5 ( 6 next year ). i am so unhappy with my present job.

I have been told by many of my friends ( whom who dont actually work ) that if i quit my job i will not be able to receive income support,is this correct?

Hi mum2aboy. Welcome along. As far as I'm aware, it's not until your child reaches the age of 7 that you're changed from income support to Jobseekers allowance. I know that they are looking to lower the age to 5, but don't think it's come into place right now. I shall have a look and hopefully post you a link which should help a little. Others will also be along who'll be able to help.

Hi again. This is a link about the changes,  here but also at the bottom is the link to One Space's 1-2-1 advisors. If you e.mail them with as much detail as possible, then you'll hear back from them as soon as they're able. It's all confidential too.

Hi mum2aboy

Welcome!

At the moment if you are the lone parent of a child under seven you can still receive Income Support. The age was said to be going down to five from 2012, so it sounds as if you would be Ok for a few months until the new rule comes in. The original date was March 2012 but they seem to be behind with transeferring the parents of older children so I am not sure how reliable that date is. At the moment it is at consultation stage and going before Parliament again. However, once the rule IS in (if it gets through as I bleiev it will) then you would be transferred onto Job Seekers Allowance and expected to look for work conscientiously.

Hope that sheds some light
