References
Can someone please inform me about what happens when a past employer doesn't give a reference because it is a part of their policy and i wasn't aware. It was the only job I have ever had and I have recently got a new job but can't start because of this. Can anyone give me some advice please?
Hi CharleneMarriott
References have changed a lot in recent years. Most companies tend to ask just a few staright questions such as how long you were employed, times off sick, whether they would employ you again.
Could you get hold of something in writing (from their website? from your original contract?) and photocopy it to prove your case, and send with applications?
There is no obligation to provide a reference. See here for some useful information.
Louise is right, most companies nowadays send out a standard form for your last employer to complete. It really is up to them if they fill it in or not. I was in this position recently and left as I hated my job, but, I did get on very well with one of the bosses so asked him for a hand written reference which he was only too happy to provide, not sure if you are in a position to do this? Failing that, what about collecting a few character references. Maybe from a neighbour youve known for a few years. Its so annoying not being able to get a reference of some kind

Hi
I can't, I'm afraid, other than putting "part of their policy is not to provide references" on the application, and then putting down character references instead.
How frustrating though.
