Sick note being replaced by Fit note
The Statement of Fitness for Work, or 'fit note, will replace the traditional sick note from 6 April 2010. From that date, if an employee falls ill or is injured, their doctor will be able to advise whether, with appropriate support from their employer, they could return to work while they recover.
The fit note reflects medical evidence that work is generally good for health and well-being and can aid recovery for many health conditions. Long periods off work can lead to isolation, loss of confidence, mental health issues, de-skilling and social exclusion.
Guidance on the fit note for employers and doctors was published last month following consultation with business groups and medical representatives.
