Happy Fathers Day!

While there is evidence that fathers were celebrated by the ancient Romans during the month of February, the practice died out until 100 years ago.

Dad and daughterA young woman in the USA wished to honour her single father who had brought up 6 children alone, and started the tradition of Fathers Day. Over time this started to include all fathers and spread to other countries.

Because this is a comparatively new celebration, we make up our own ‘things to do’ to show praise and recognition of our fathers.

Share with your children why Fathers Day is celebrated and encourage them to show you their gratitude for being The Greatest Dad in the World! Your children could, weather permitting make a picnic for you in the garden or local park, perhaps tidy the house for one day, (or maybe just their own room!) or let you choose to watch the ‘boring’ programme on TV that you love without any groaning, or they could have craft time and make you a home-made card.

Above all, remember, that it all started in honour of Single Fathers and it is a chance for you to be celebrated for being the fab chaps that you are!

Come and tell us on the Happy Fathers Day discussion thread about what your children have done for you in the Just For Dads forum.
