Benefit changes if your youngest child is seven or above

Number sevenThe Government has made changes to the welfare benefits system.

From October 2010 if you are a single parent you will no longer be entitled to Income Support. Instead you will have to claim Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA).

The majority of single parents who are moved onto JSA need to be available for work and actively seeking work.

Will I have to get a job?

  • You have to prove that you are trying to get a job by applying for jobs and going to interviews.
  • You will be allowed to look for work which is suitable for you and your family.
  • However, you will not be able to refuse a job which the Jobcentre Plus thinks is suitable.
  • If you can’t find a job your benefits should not be stopped or reduced.
  • If you need childcare and can’t find it, your benefits should not be stopped or reduced.

What is the difference between Income Support and Job Seekers Allowance?

  • When you get Income Support you do not have to look for a job, you can choose to stay at home with your children and also to study or volunteer.
  • When you get Job Seekers Allowance you will have to show the Jobcentre that you are looking for work by doing things such as applying for jobs and going for interviews, if you don’t they could reduce your benefit.
  • When you get Job Seekers Allowance it may be difficult to volunteer or study as the Jobcentre may decide that you are not available for work if you are busy doing other things.
